Agility Training with Val H. |
Blaze is my Fizz's baby brother, born after a repeat mating of Moet with my Bliss. The Hawker family fell in love with him before he opened his eyes and he lives with Paul and Val and their two daughters and is the light of their life.
I saw Blaze regularly after they took him home, and soon asked Val if she’d like me to get him qualified for Crufts, just for fun, so I began taking him to Ringcraft classes, while Val took him for Puppy Socialisation and then Companion Dog Training classes, where he proved to be a super boy, coming 1st, with Grade A, in his end of term tests in the Beginners, Intermediate and the Advanced classes.
I began to show Blaze as soon as he turned 6 months, and he qualified for Crufts first time out, winning Minor Puppy Dog and going Res Best Puppy In Show, at the Border Collie Club Of GB Championship Show, under judge Eric Broadhurst. That win also qualified him for Puppy Of The Year, and set the scene for Blaze's wonderful year in the ring.

Blaze went BEST PUPPY IN SHOW, under Pam Harris, at the East Anglian BC Club Championship show, and at Kensington Canine Society, he went Best of Breed, won the Pastoral Group, and went BEST PUPPY IN SHOW, under judge, Patricia Clayton.
Blaze qualified for Crufts on no less than 30 occasions, which is quite some achievement, and gained enough points to become the 2008 BORDER COLLIE CLUB OF GB TOP PUPPY. At his final Champ show as a puppy, City of Birmingham, under judge Robin Newhouse, Blaze went Best Puppy In Breed, and took the Res Challenge Certificate, (96 dogs,) making him the youngest dog to qualify for Border Collie Of The Year 2009.
Blaze has had lots of excellent critiques – after awarding him Best of Breed at Thames Valley, judge Nina Rowlands wrote: "One of the most fabulous Border Collies I have ever had the pleasure of judging, every inch a male. The most keen, alert expression, skull fairly broad and equal in length to foreface, ample stop, beautiful dark eye, correct earset with ears carried semi-erect. Strong muzzle and correct scissor bite, muscular neck, very well laid shoulders. Ideal size for a male, with good substance, deep ribcage, in excellent hard condition, so well muscled, so soundly constructed, movement was an absolute pleasure to watch. Very "fit for function". Best of Breed, Best Puppy."
By now, Val had really caught the showing bug herself, so she began handling classes, practicing on Bliss and Fizz, and finally took Blaze's lead after Crufts 2009. She handled Blaze to win the Pastoral Group at Horsham, and then to BEST IN SHOW, under Richard Lucas, at the Wessex BC Club Show. Sadly I was judging myself, and missed seeing that, but I was there when Blaze went Best Dog and RES BEST IN SHOW at West of England BC Show, under Pete Simmons. Brilliant!
Not content with just showing, Val began agility training with Blaze in June 2009, and at just her 3rd Agility Show, in June 2010, Blaze got 6th place in Grade 1 Agility at Axstane, out of 130 entries. Val has also trained Blaze to be a very versatile dog, and they joined me with Bliss, Fizz and Bonny at the Midlands BC Club Utility Day, where Blaze passed 6 disciplines, to become the holder of the Border Collie Silver Utility Certificate. I'm so proud of both Val and Blaze – fantastic achievements all round, especially when I remember that when we first met, the Hawkers only came to get a pet puppy from me.
