Beautiful Bertie was born in Dandy’s & Darcy’s 4th and final litter, and I gave him to my daughter, Sarah, to whom I had also given his dam, Darcy. Destined for the Obedience ring, not the show ring, I nonetheless persuaded Sarah to come with me to Scotland when Bertie was 6 months old, where she qualified him for Crufts 2019, where they also got placed! ☺

At Bath 2019, Bertie won both Junior Dog and Special Beginners Dog classes, and they went on to win the Special Beginners Pastoral Group, under Judge Richard Morris who wrote: "Twelve months old, well angulated Sable dog of good size and outline, lovely sweep of neck into well placed shoulders, deep chest slight length to body. Presented in pleasing coat and condition and the soundest mover in the class, with pleasing tail carriage."

At Crufts 2020, Sarah couldn’t show Bertie - as luck would have it, his class coincided with her handling Darcy, upstairs in Hall 3, in the Grand Finals of the Kennel Club GCDSD Pre-Beginners Stakes, which they won! However, our dear friend, Ellie Chadwick, handled Bertie in the show ring, and he came 2nd in Undergraduate Dog, under breed specialist, Rachel Spencer, who wrote, “Lovely flowing outline, good head and good reach of neck, lovely croup, good angles fore and aft. Unfortunately naughty at times on the move, but did enough to show his good ground-covering side gait.”

Bertie also got 2nd in GCDSD, beating Dandy and me into the VHC spot, but I was absolutely delighted to have two of my beloved Sable boys, father and son, placed in the same Crufts class! ☺

Before Lockdown, Sarah and Bertie were 2nd in Pre-Beginner, at St. Edwards Open Obedience Show, qualifying him for the Semi-Finals of the Kennel Club Pre-Beginners Stakes, at Discover Dogs 2019. Sarah felt he wasn't ready for that competition, so she concentrated on Darcy, who had also qualified - they came 2nd and went on to the Grand Finals at Crufts, see Darcy's page. ☺ Currently, Sarah is doing lots of training rounds with Bertie, at Obedience Shows, preparing to compete for real. I can’t wait to see how they get on, as Bertie will be starting out again, but this time in Novice. ☺
